Despite a cancer diagnosis, Michael Gravelle said he will continue with his duties as provincial natural resources minister and as MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North.
In a Nov. 19, release, Gravelle said he has an aggressive form of lymphoma, and while the prognosis for a full recovery is good, he will have to undergo chemotherapy treatments over the next several months.
"Certainly, I am more than conscious that these treatments will have an impact on my well-being and may, in fact, affect my ability to function in my usual all-out manner; particularly around the time of the actual chemotherapy sessions. However, I also know that many people receiving these treatments continue on with their regular lives, including work and, while I will be following the advice of my physicians' 'to the letter' as to how I can protect myself throughout this process, I am hoping that I will be able to carry on with my life as normally as possible."
Premier Dalton McGuinty immediately sent his well wishes.
"Our entire caucus appreciates Michael’s good nature, his friendship and the steady hand of experience he provides to our government. Michael is passionate about serving in a portfolio that’s so vital to the North that he loves and the province that makes him proud. So it comes as no surprise that he is determined to continue serving Ontarians and the people of Thunder Bay-Superior North as he seeks treatment. My direction to him has been clear: Your health must come first, but we are grateful for all you’re able to continue doing in service to all of us. Our entire cabinet will stand ready to assist in any way we can."
Provincial NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was quick with her response.
"I was shocked to hear the news about his health, but happy to hear his confidence about treatment and to see the support of family and friends. I want to wish Michael a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to the Legislature.
