Detour Gold Corporation has signed an impact benefit agreement with the Wahgoshig First Nation for the development and operation of the Detour Lake gold project, 180 kilometres north of Timmins.
This signing follows the community's unanimous ratification of the key terms of the agreement, which will provide the First Nation with opportunities to participate in the economic development of the project.
It also outlines how the community will benefit from education and training initiatives as well as employment and business opportunities. There are also provisions for financial compensation.
The agreement also indicates a mutual commitment to consult as the project progresses, with either party recognizing the other's rights and interests.
Detour Gold has also endorsed a commitment to safeguard the environment and show recognition of the Wahgoshig First Nation's social and cultural heritage.
"Wahgoshig is open for business with partners like Detour Gold," said Chief David Babin in a release.
