The province has given the green light to Detour Gold to officially begin construction on its Detour Lake mine project, 180 kilometres north of Timmins.
This includes approval of the closure plan through the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, as well as approval for its environmental assessment for a temporary power supply, or a diesel generator of less than five megawatts.
An individual environmental assessment for a permanent power supply, a 230-kilovolt transmission line, has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment and is in the final review stage. This is expected to be approved in the next month.
Detour Gold is also continuing the permitting process with a comprehensive study report for the federal environmental assessment.
Agreements are still being finalized with local Aboriginal groups due to be impacted by the project. These are expected to be ratified by the end of the year.
