The mad scramble by Northern Ontario forest product companies and organizations to apply to harvest 11-million cubic metres of Crown wood has forced the province to push back a critical application deadline.

The March 4 deadline for submissions to the Provincial Wood Supply Process has been extended to March 31.

"Many of the companies involved asked us for extra time so we extended the deadline by a few weeks," said Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry spokeswoman Anne-Marie Flanagan in an e-mailed response.

Announced Nov. 26, the government is accepting proposals for unused and underutilized wood including logs and biomass. The competition is open new and existing Canadian and international companies.
