The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) is weighing in on funding cuts to the provincial Forest Roads program.
“These roads are public access roads, used by tourists, campers, hunters, as well as other industries including hydro and mining and, as such, are extremely important to Northern Ontario,” said FONOM president Al Spacek in a June 29 release.
FONOM is joining the Ontario Forest Industries Association in calling for a restoration of money to a funding level of $65 million.
Spacek said the $27 million cutback to the program is a “sudden and far-reaching blow” to a key industry sector in the North. He said it will result in many summer road construction jobs being lost and may hurt the jobs of many more in the long run.
