Thunder Bay's Confederation College is expanding its apprenticeship program with some provincial funding.
Starting next fall, Confederation students can earn a college diploma and a certificate of qualification in a skilled trade at the same time through its Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship Program. It lets students pursue both diploma courses and apprenticeship in-school training for a related skilled trade.
The college is receiving $185,000 for its culinary management program and $189,000 in funding for its instrumentation engineering technician program.
The province said this allows more flexibility within the apprenticeship system while responding to the needs of employers.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro said the funding gives students a competitive edge in their field and more opportunities for in-demand jobs.
“This program provides another option for young people who are considering trades training. It allows students to study for a diploma and also work in their field of interest as an apprentice, so that they have real on-the-job experience – a combination of learning and skills which may prove attractive to employers.”
Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle said supporting these programs “is part of how our government is building a highly skilled and educated workforce, to ensure a strong economy for Northern Ontario in the future.”
