Coming to an open pit near you

Ministry of Labour safety inspectors are fanning out across Ontario on a month-long safety inspection blitz of pits and quarries.

Ministry of Labour safety inspectors are fanning out across Ontario on a month-long safety inspection blitz of pits and quarries.

In a June 30 statement, the ministry said it is focusing on rock crushing, screening and conveying processes at these operations to check out guarding devices, written lockout procedures, dust control measures and to ensure that protective hearings are worn.

“Pits and quarries can be hazardous places to work,” said Labour Minister Charles Sousa. “Inspectors will check that legislation is being complied with.”
