Canadian National Railway plans to spend $10 million to build more sidings in its Northern Ontario corridor.

The rail carrier announced July 19 it was building two extended sidings in the region this year. CN has spent almost $21 million so far to extend five sidings on this main line.

A siding in Caramat, in the municipality of Greenstone, will be lengthened from 7,050 feet to 13,700 feet, while another at a location called Green, just east of Armstrong, will be extended from 6,380 feet to 12,400 feet. There are plans to extend two more in 2012.

CN's main line through Northern Ontario handles an average of 14 freight trains daily with intermodal traffic between the West Coast and Toronto, and two transcontinental passenger trains three days a week.

The company said the longer sidings allow CN to maximize the lengths of its longer-train operating plan. The investments are part of the company's larger $1.7 billion capital spending program this year.
