The Central Party of the People's Republic of China has officially approved a joint venture between Timmins' Northern College and Yangzhou College of Environment and Resources, paving the way for curriculum sharing.
Originally announced in March, the partnership will allow 40 Chinese students to participate in Northern's environmental technician water and wastewater systems operations program this fall.
The agreement will find Northern licensing the curriculum for two other programs, including computer engineering technician, and business administration - accounting, at its partner college in China.
Students will be registered as Northern students and will pay tuition fees to the school.
To complete the requirements for graduation in their final year of study, Chinese students can either attend one of Northern's campuses or remain in China. Successful completion of the program will provide a Northern College diploma
"While I was in China, officials impressed upon me their concern and determination to improve the quality of municipal drinking water systems," said Northern College President Fred Gibbons in a release.
"At present, very few systems offer potable water and with a population of 1.3 billion people, not only is this a vital issue, it represents a huge opportunity for our program and Northern College."
