A Canadore College Aviation student brought home gold from the 17th Skills Canada National competition held in Québec City recently.

A Canadore College Aviation student brought home gold from the 17th Skills Canada National competition held in Québec City recently.

Ryan Spurrell, Canadore aviation technician – aircraft maintenance graduate (2011), was awarded the gold medal after competing in the postsecondary aircraft maintenance category against students from across Canada.

The skills competition, held from June1 to 4, attracted more than 500 of Canada’s top talent in the skilled trades and more than 20,000 spectators. Secondary and postsecondary level students participated in more than 40 trade and technology contests and vied to be named the best in their chosen discipline against exacting industry standards.

The contest lasted more than 12 hours, and tested contestants’ skills and knowledge in sheet metal repair, flight control rigging, tensioning and safetying, pitot static testing, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS) Exam, gas turbine component replacement and weight and balance report.
