Sudbury's Cambrian College has received $200,000 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to pursue applied three research projects for the environment and energy sectors.
The grant will allow the school to pursue these projects in partnership with local companies. These include:
The investigation of techniques to clean up heavy metals from residential and industrial soils affected by mining and smelting.
The development and assessment of a design for an off-grid energy alternative for residential buildings in Northern climates.
The development of a prototype, high-efficiency heat battery to store solar energy in thermal form so it may then be used on demand for residential applications in Northern communities.
The projects will be integrated into Cambrian's curriculum for energy systems technology, environmental monitoring and impact assessment, chemical engineering technology, and instrumentation and control technology.
