Cell phone and high-speed Internet service is about to get better along the corridors of Hwy. 17 and 638.

NetCentral Community Communications Network and the Algoma District Network have activated a new wireless cell site along Hwy. 638, which will enhance services in the Echo Bay area.

A similar site was activated at Desbarats in December. Together, the sites enable mobile broadband services to be delivered via Bell's 4G High-Speed Packet Access-plus (HSPA+).

The initiative is designed to fill the gaps in wireless telecommunications service in the East Algoma region.

Funding totalling $945,150 for the upgrades came from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC), along with an additional investment of $315,000 from Bell, was announced in May.
