Three Sault Ste. Marie businesses were recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit at the 2012 Bridges to Better Business Nov. 7.
The Bridges to Better Business Award was given to Soogoma Industries, a non-profit organization that provides support and development services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The award goes to a local enterprise that demonstrates innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial excellence.
Youth entrepreneur Kristine Dovigi received the Summer Company Award, which goes to the recipient with the highest revenue generated in the Summer Company youth entrepreneurship program, which provides grants for students to start their own seasonal business. Dovigi operated the Howliday Inn, which cared for people’s pets while they were out of town.
Bruce Strapp was presented with the Alynn Burke Award of Excellence, which recognizes an individual who champions youth development or entrepreneurship. As executive director of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp., and former CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp., Bruce has been a longtime advocate of youth entrepreneurship.
More than 150 people came to the event, which featured learning seminars, networking opportunities and the awards ceremony.
