Barrick Gold was recognized by an industry association for its corporate social responsibility at its Hemlo operations in northwestern Ontario.
The international miner was the recipient of a special Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Award by the Mining Association of Canada at the annual Mining Day on the Hill event in Ottawa, Nov. 22.
The award is given to operations and companies that meet or exceed a ranking of 'A' across a number of performance categories.
Hemlo is only the second operation to win such an award since 2006.
Barrick was recognized for its “ongoing commitment to responsible mining” by engaging municipalities, First Nations and a national park in providing regular site updates and in partnering with local organizations and institutions to benefit the region and promote mining careers to area schools.
Also recognized at the event were De Beers Canada, Diavik Diamond Mines, Iron Ore Company of Canada, Syncrude Canada, Teck Resources and Xstrata.
