Enrolment at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie has reached a new record, with a 20.3 per cent increase over last year’s numbers.

As of Nov. 1, 1,427 students were enrolled at the school for the 2012-2013 year. The growth is being attributed to new programming and strong recruitment efforts.

“The department of business and economics still tops enrolment with 28 per cent of the students. Computer science is strong as well,” said Algoma’s registrar, David Marasco, in a news release. “However, the three new honours programs in social work, geography and biology are all making positive strides forward.”

President Richard Myers said the school has its largest first-year class ever, which was also the most diverse.

“This bodes well for all of our students as they prepare to live and work in a global community,” he said in the release. “It’s also very positive for the Sault’s economic and social development with so many newcomers to the area.”
