A new coat of paint for the iconic Little Current swing bridge and the reconstruction of the Goulais River bridge north of Sault Ste. Marie are among the infrastructure refurbishment projects slated for the Algoma-Manitoulin region.
Under the Northern Highways Program, the provincial government will spend more than $618 million on rehabilitation and expansion projects in 2011-2012. The government estimates the combined projects will create 4,000 jobs across the North.
Key projects identified by the province include the structural coating of the Little Current swing bridge on Highway 6; the repair of the Highway 6 Whitefish Falls bridge near Espanola; and the repair of Highway 6 from South Baymouth north on Manitoulin Island.
Also on the list are the resurfacing of Highway 108 north in Elliot Lake, a culvert replacement and road repair on Highway 17 east of Nairn Centre and similar treatment on Highway 17 west of Highway 6, as well as reconstruction of the Goulais River bridge north of Sault Ste. Marie.
Near Wawa, there will be a culvert replacement north of Highway 101, as well as the resurfacing of the highway east of Wawa, and Highway 631 near Hornepayne will get resurfacing treatment.
