Algoma University's academic dean, Dr. Arthur Perlini, has been appointed to a fourth three-year term.
The appointment will make him the longest serving dean at the university. He is responsible for the hiring and development of the teaching faculty and the delivery of all academic programming.
After a review of Perlini's performance and accomplishments by special committee, it was recommended to the Senate that he stay on for a fourth term, and the Senate voted in favour of the recommendation.
"The position of Academic Dean is without question the toughest job at the University," Algoma president Dr. Richard Myers said in a news release. "You have to have exceptional diplomatic skills, an almost infinite capacity for work and a very thick skin. Arthur has performed admirably and I'm delighted that he's willing to serve another term."
During his most recent term in office, Dr. Perlini oversaw a substantial expansion of the faculty complement and the development of new programs in biology, social work and geography. He was also responsible for securing Algoma University's eligibility for external research funding from the federal government's research councils and then oversaw a substantial infusion of new research money into the university.
Last year, Dr. Perlini was promoted to the rank of full professor for his ongoing scholarly work in the field of psychology. Full professor is the highest possible rank an academic can achieve and Dr. Perlini is now one of only four full professors at Algoma.
