Aecon Construction and Materials Ltd. was awarded a $46.3-million construction contract to continue four-laning work between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

Two new lanes will be added from Highway 527, heading east for 13 kilometres. It's a continuation of a widened highway between Hodder Avenue at Thunder Bay and Highway 527 which was completed in Sept. 2012.

Construction starts later this year with completion expected in 2015. Another four-laning project is also underway between Mackenzie Station Road and Birch Beach Road.

Once work is complete, there will be 33 kilometres of four-lane highway from Hodder Avenue to Birch Beach.

"Coming on the heels of the completion of the first major expansion project on Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon, this initiative is another important step in the four-laning of this corridor," said Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North
