AbitibiBowater certifies northwestern Ontario forests

AbitibiBowater received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for the Black Spruce and Dog-River Matawin Forests, north of Thunder Bay. The 2.5 million hectares of forest stretches from Quetico Provincial Park to Lake Nipigon.

The 2.5 million hectares of forest stretches from Quetico Provincial Park to Lake Nipigon.

“This effort is part of our ongoing strategy to meet market expectations as well as ensuring our commitment to sustainable forest management,” said president and CEO Richard Garneau in a statement.

The FSC certification process took more than a year to complete and included consultation with local citizen groups, communities, First Nations and forestry contractors.
