Manitoulin Island is the recipient of a $2.7-million provincial windfall, which will be distributed Island-wide to seven different projects.
The island, located southwest of Sudbury, will receive $2.7,05,273 from the NOHFC under a variety of programs. The projects are expected to create 27 jobs and boost the local economy.
“We are making, and will continue to make, considerable efforts to drive our Northern economy in a direction for success,” Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Mike Brown said in a news release. “We are proud to support the progressive ideas on Manitoulin Island.”
Under the Infrastructure and Community Development Program, the Manitoulin Airport Commission will receive $842,996 to implement a job retention program that involves the restoration and repaving of aircraft runways to improve the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport's safety standards.
Also in Gore Bay, $183,600 will be used to renovate the wharf building, creating a space for artists, including a reception room, exhibit room, reading room, and eight studio rental spaces, creating 12 jobs.
In Meldrum Bay, $400,000 will be used to implement phase three of the Waterfront Development Project, which will result in 20 new docking slips, health and safety improvements, and upgrades to the existing wharf, creating one job
Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute on the M'Chigeeng First Nation will develop an education and business centre that contains computer labs, a community resource centre, and a business incubator site, creating five jobs. A total of $1 million has been allotted to the project.
Under the Young Entrepreneur and Entrepreneur Programs, Shears hair salon in Manitowaning will use $9,282 to expand and renovate the business, creating one job.
TerraStar Building Products has received $115,000 to renovate, purchase new equipment, and build a manufacturing facility in Manitowaning. The facility will produce roll-formed roofing and siding panels, as well as accessories, creating eight jobs.
Through the Emerging Technology Program, the Manitoulin Planning Board will use $154,395 to complete a Geographic Information System for the Manitoulin Planning Area, which will serve as the foundation for an upcoming Official Plan program and future zoning bylaw exercises.
