A Sudbury developer has purchased the Sudbury water tower hinting at future development, while supporting research for a debilitating neurological disease in the process.
On July 27, Dario Zulich, CEO of TESC Contracting Company Ltd. and a partner in Zulich Enterprises, announced he has purchased the Sudbury landmark and donated $80,000 to the Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation as part of the purchase agreement.
The Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation was founded by Sudbury businessman Jeff Perreault after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2014 at the age of 32. Its goal is to fund and accelerate the development of a unique cellular replacement treatment that restores health and motor functions for patients with ALS, prevents progression of the disease, and potentially offers a cure.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that kills the nerve cells that control a body’s muscles. Eventually, those diagnosed with the disease lose their mobility, speech, and ability to breathe, leading to death.
Perreault, a co-owner of Media Environmental, purchased the water tower in 2010 with plans for a major development at the site.
Zulich said he will aim to preserve the water tower. The donation to the Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation is in support of Perrault, whom he considers a friend.
“The Sudbury water tower is a well-known symbol in our community, and I am committed to its preservation,” said Dario Zulich.
“I will make every attempt to honour Jeff’s wish for future development, as the tower and property have great potential. But most importantly, I am pleased that this purchase can enlighten efforts with ALS stem cell research. I hope that my donation will provide some assistance to this remarkable cause.”
TESC is a heavy industrial, multi-disciplined contracting company, which predominately operates in Ontario and Saskatchewan, with regional offices located in Sudbury and Saskatoon.
Zulich is also a partner in the family owned business Zulich Enterprises, a private real estate holding and development company.
Zulich and his two partners are additionally promoting the True North Strong proposal, which consists of the development of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose events centre in Greater Sudbury, created through a public-private partnership.
