The engineer who last inspected the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake before its roof collapsed has been charged by the OPP.

Robert Wood, 64, of Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. He is expected to appear in court in Elliot Lake on March 25.

Part of the roof of the Algo Centre Mall, located in Elliot Lake, collapsed on June 23, 2012, killing Lucie Aylwin, 37, and Dolores Perizzolo, 74, and injuring others.

The OPP said it would not comment further on the specific aspects of the investigation that led to the charges as the investigation is ongoing. The OPP began its investigation in July 2012, following the collapse of the mall’s roof in June.

The Elliot Lake Inquiry into the incident concluded in October 2013. Its mandate was to inquire into and report on events surrounding the collapse, as well as the emergency management and response. A report from Justice Paul Belanger is expected to be released in October 2014.
