Manitoulin Group of Companies has purchased another transportation company, this time Ridsdale Transport Ltd. of Saskatchewan.

In a news release, the company said the purchase positions Manitoulin Group as Saskatchewan's largest transportation and logistics provider, with the most comprehensive portfolio of services.

CEO Gord Smith said the company has been eyeing Saskatchewan “for some time.”

“We have been looking for the right company to meet our exacting standards and our strategic business needs,” he said in the release. “Ridsdale not only provides the routes, the equipment and the human resources we desire, but demonstrates a culture of service excellence and dependability that we and our customers expect.

“Manitoulin is now Saskatchewan's largest transportation company, with the significant competitive advantage of being able to provide customers with the technology, the global reach, and all the transportation and supply chain offerings they depend on to grow their business.”

In business since 1949, Ridsdale Transport provides LTL service in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, in addition to courier service and other specialized offerings. Ridsdale will operate as a separate business within the Manitoulin Group of Companies.

Over the last several years, Manitoulin has steadily made a series of acquisitions, adding to its main fleet, which is anchored by Manitoulin Transport.

Founded in 1953 by patriarch Doug Smith, the original company was launched in 1953 in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island and maintains its current headquarters there.
