Sudbury council digs deep to support mining innovation

The City of Greater Sudbury Council and the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation approved $1 million in funding for the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) Commercialization Attainment Program.

The City of Greater Sudbury Council and the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation approved $1 million in funding for the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) Commercialization Attainment Program.

The program will receive $200,000 a year until 2019.

“Council’s decision to support the Commercialization Attainment Program (CAP) underscores the vital role our mining and mining supply and services sector plays in our economic prosperity,” said Mayor Brian Bigger. “The funding will ensure that the CAP program helps local businesses bring new, innovative and proprietary technologies to the market faster and expand job opportunities in Greater Sudbury.”

CAP is a part of the $47 million Ultra Deep Mining Project (UDMN), which aims to become the leading expert in Ultra-Deep (below 2.5 km) research and innovation, and to solve the challenges that impact resource extraction in these environments.
