Tony Ring of Fire states his case

By: Northern Ontario Business staff

FedNor Minister Tony Clement took his love for the Ring of Fire to a lunchtime meeting of business leaders at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in Toronto, March 11.

As the new lead minister in charge of the future James Bay mining camp, Clement reaffirmed Ottawa's commitment toward making things happen in the James Bay lowlands.

“The Ring of Fire represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create jobs, and generate growth and long-term prosperity for Northern Ontario and the nation,” said Clement. “As minister for FedNor, and as the federal lead minister on this initiative, I welcome the opportunity to work with all levels of government, as well as First Nations and industry stakeholders to prepare and implement the collaborative economic development approaches for the region.”

The mineral exploration region in Ontario's remote north potentially contains Canada's largest concentration of chromite, nickel and copper with more than a century of mine life.

“Our government's plan for responsible resource development supports jobs and our economy while increasing environmental protection,” said Clement. “This development has the potential to materially improve the economic prospects and quality of life for thousands.”
