Provincial highway contracts awarded

Warm weather signals the start of highway and bridge construction season in Northern Ontario. Pioneer Construction landed a $15.6 million contract to resurface 31 kilometres of the Trans-Canada Highway, east of the 11-17 junction near Nipigon.

Pioneer Construction landed a $15.6 million contract to resurface 31 kilometres of the Trans-Canada Highway, east of the 11-17 junction near Nipigon.

The work, which began this month, involves replacing the Jackfish River bridge and refurbishing the Jackpine River bridge.

Pioneer also was awarded a $10.4 million contract to rebuild a 24-kilometre stretch of Highway 144, northwest of Sudbury at Cartier, starting this spring.

Fowler Construction received the go-ahead on a $4.8 million contract to reconstruct 16 kilometres of Highway 124 near Magnetawan. The highway connects Parry Sound to South River.

Wilco Contractors Superior was awarded a $4.6 million contract to replace the Sturgeon River bridge on Highway 11 near Geraldton. The bridge is west of the Highway 584 junction. Work begins in June.
