The Brampton Board of Trade has named Algoma University president and vice-chancellor Asima Vezina as its 2024 Business Person of the Year.
The award goes to an individual that has demonstrated business excellence and community leadership, contributing to Brampton in both professional and personal endeavours.
The Sault Ste. Marie-based post-secondary institution has a campus in the downtown Brampton, which has experienced “record enrollment growth, successfully introduced new academic programming, and an expanded research presence” during Vezina’s tenure with Algoma, said a trade of board news release.
Vezina was praised as “champion for innovation and regional development” for the university’s strategic initiatives in driving economic development and leading social and cultural change.
“Dr. Vezina’s tenacity is contagious; everything she does, she does with passion. Dr. Vezina works tirelessly to build and strengthen bridges with stakeholders from the post-secondary, government, research, business and other sectors – locally, regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally.”
Vezina was named to her current position at Algoma in October 2017 and was re-upped for a second term in June 2022.
She will collect the award at a gala on May 2.
