SynFuel Technologies is moving ahead with plans to build a power plant at Thunder Bay's Valley Camp terminal.
The Illinois company recently wrapped up an environmental cleanup of the site, carting off spent PCBs, used fuel oil and other non-hazardous chemicals. The cleanup is to make way for a $1.4-billion (US) plant running on petroleum coke, a byproduct of oil refining. SynFuel paid for the cleanup as a condition of the terminal's purchase.
The company is further completing an independent, third-party test of the plant's gasifier to record emission levels to present to the Ontario Environmental Assessment Group. Securing the necessary permitting and project financing is to follow.
