Timmins students with a head for business who are inclined toward social responsibility are being given a chance to win $3,000 toward starting a new social entrepreneurship business in a student pitch competition and workshop this month.

ENACTUS Northern College and Head Start in Business are sponsoring the event, dubbed Social Thinktank, taking place March 27 and 28 in Timmins.

The event is designed to give students firsthand experience in developing and proposing a business model.

In addition to $3,000 in funding, the winner will receive mentorship from business owners in the community, as well as in-kind services, such as accounting, legal and marketing services.

“This is a great opportunity for businesses to work with social agencies and to develop business models that help solve or alleviate social issues,” said ,” said Cindy Reasbeck, Northern Ontario program manager at Head Start in Business, in a release.

ENACTUS – an acronym for ‘entrepreneurial,’ ‘action’ and ‘us’ – is an international non-profit organization that encourages students to explore entrepreneurship.

Based in Temiskaming, Head Start in Business offers programming to increase awareness of, and introduce students to, entrepreneurship.
