Moosonee Airport will receive $220,000 for safety improvement projects.

Reginald Belair, MP for the Timmins and James Bay area, made the announcement earlier this on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette. The announcement is part of the federal funding of $10.2 million announced for airport improvement projects at eight airports in Ontario.

The projects involve apron floodlighting upgrades and the purchase of one runway sweeper. The lighting is of particular concern due to the northern location of the airport, which can experience up to 18 hours of low light or nighttime conditions.

The Airport Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) is part of the National Airports Policy, which was announced in July of 1995.

Under ACAP airports may apply for funding towards capital projects relocated to safety, assets protection and operating costs reduction.

The Moosonee Airport is designated as a remote airport under the National Airports Policy.

Moosonee Airport serves as a transportation hub for several communities in the North, handling an average of 23,850 passengers annually.
