A feasibility study is underway to determine the economic impact of a proposed Science Village in Timmins.

Planned Approach, JL Richards and Associates and Electronic Commerce Management Group will be working on the study, which is slated for

completion in late December. They will identify possible site selections, funding support and develop a business plan, along with a viability and sustainability report, which will help the project move forward into Phase 2.

The proposed Science Village will be a science centre for research in a number of industries, including forestry and mining. It will also be used by the education sector, and, through potential partnerships with organizations like Science North in Sudbury, it will become a tourist attraction.

Requests for proposals (RFPs) have already concluded for the first phase of development. The second stage will commence in November with RFPs for a consultant. Phase 2, to begin by January 2005, will involve drumming up community, private and government financial support for the initiative. Phase 3 will cover a detailed plan of the huts and the centre, followed by the construction stage.
