Falco urges city to axe tax assessment appeal (6/02)

Falconbridge continues to ask the City of Timmins to drop an appeal of Kidd Creek's 2001 municipal tax assessment. The nickel producer says the appeal will cost the company an additional $2.

Falconbridge continues to ask the City of Timmins to drop an appeal of Kidd Creek's 2001 municipal tax assessment. The nickel producer says the appeal will cost the company an additional $2.5 million in taxes above the current $7 million they pay, and will cost Timmins taxpayers $200,000 to $300,000 in legal fees.

An official with the company said Falconbridge feels it is being unfairly targeted in the appeal. Dan Gignac, general manager of Falconbridge's Kidd mining division, suggested Timmins city councillors team up with other struggling regional municipalities to oppose the provincial Municipal Property Assessment Corp. for the 2003 taxation year.
