Thunder Bay biotech sector to expand (04/04)

A multi-national medical devices company has short-listed Thunder Bay as one of the potential areas of relocating.

A multi-national medical devices company has short-listed Thunder Bay as one of the potential areas of relocating. Under a confidentiality agreement Derik Brandt, manager of economic development and tourism for Thunder Bay, could not divulge the name of the company, but said it already has ties in Thunder Bay with private industry, which gives the city more weight.

“They told us the type of plant they will open up would be the size of Bowater (paper producing facility),” Brandt disclosed.

“This is a community effort to attract this business to Thunder Bay.”

Company representatives are being sent to other areas to consider the benefits of each community and if they choose Thunder Bay, “we would be looking at minimum 300 to 400 people (jobs) based on initial discussions. These would be high paying jobs again, and it would be within one of our targeted clusters,” Brandt adds.
