T-Bay port shipments buoyed by coal

Coal shipments through the Port of Thunder Bay were up dramatically in August compared to the same period last year. The port authority recorded 102,383 tonnes of coal for the month compared to 43,014 during August, 2012.

The port authority recorded 102,383 tonnes of coal for the month compared to 43,014 during August, 2012.

So far, 417,077 tonnes of coal have passed through the western Lake Superior port during the current shipping season, which appears to be on track to surpass last year's totals of 509,882 tonnes.

Grain cargoes in August declined; 386,059 tonnes compared to 452,074 tonnes during the same month in 2012; with potash shipments down by 24,015 tonnes and liquid bulk cargoes down by 16,114 tonnes.
