An above average count of housing starts for the fourth quarter in Thunder Bay pushed residential construction starts above 2000 levels according to data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. The 53 single-detached starts and 40 multiple-family units in the final quarter pushed the number of housing starts up for 2001, but the 2001 total of starts - 211 - is still well below the long-term average for housing starts for the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), according to CMHC officials. The majority of construction in the CMA for the year continued to be within the city limits.
