Push for smoking bans continues (3/02)

A survey conducted by the Dryden Chamber of Commerce has found that the majority of business people in the city want the province to develop rules on smoking in public and work spaces

Sioux Lookout could beat Dryden to the punch with a smoke-free workplace bylaw in place as early as March or April of this year. Not all Sioux Lookout municipal councillors endorse the move, but a majority is in favour of it.

Three other municipalities in northwestern Ontario have recently heard about the results of a survey conducted by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. The survey in Nipigon, Red Rock and Dorion suggests a majority of residents are in favour of making restaurants and bars smoke free.

A recent full-page ad in Thunder Bay's Chronicle Journal listed 300 Northern Ontario doctors who say second-hand smoke is a major cause of cancer.
