Plans quashed (03/04)

Plans to develop a biotechnology incubator at Thunder Bay’s old hospital have been halted after city officials realized only 46 per cent of 250,000-square-foot facility was usable.

Plans to develop a biotechnology incubator at Thunder Bay’s old hospital have been halted after city officials realized only 46 per cent of 250,000-square-foot facility was usable.

“There were good intentions for the facility because it would have brought a lot more money into the community,” Ray Williamson, project developer and marketer for Dominion Construction, says.

Even if the city were to tear down the site, they would have to consider the decommissioning costs into the land value to try to recoup money, and that would be too expensive.

Williamson adds that Dominion put approximately $100,000 toward the feasibility study because they believed in Thunder Bay as an up-and-coming technology hot spot.

No new projects for the facility have been announced.

Thunder Bay’s new hospital opened last month.

The 686,000-square-foot structure will be equipped with 375 acute beds and possess state-of the-art equipment to help patients in the northwest receive optimum care.
