Thunder Bay officials will head south in mid-August in an attempt to secure a conditional deal to bring a former Great Lakes passenger steamer to the North as a tourist attraction.

The Michigan owner of the Keewatin is willing to sell to the steamer to Thunder Bay, but details of the costs in moving the ship and the feasibility and business plan must be worked out.

Councillors say they were influenced by public support to initiate discussions with the ship owner. A $20,000-cap on the cost of negotiations was set.
