Norampac Inc. was fined $75,000 in August for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that resulted in injuries to a plant employee at the company's liner paper mill in Red Rock, Ont. last December.
The worker was using a shovel to clean wood chips from below a moving conveyor when the worker's glove became caught in the conveyor between the roller and belt. The worker's arm was drawn in. The friction caused a burn to the back of the worker's right shoulder and the worker also received a cut on the leg, which required stitches.
Norampac pleaded guilty to failing to take the reasonable precaution by developing and implementing standard procedures for cleaning around the conveyor.
