A recommendation to build a new health facility in Kenora was announced by the hospital board members at a general meeting.
The existing hospital is too small for the services being offered now. Any new programs being considered for the community would have no space, therefore a new hospital must be built, says a board member.
Seven sites are being considered for the new location, including areas accessible by water, since the population of Kenora more than doubles to 70,000 in the summer months from cottagers. The hospital board members want the new hospital to become a health centre where they can focus on progressive services and progressive thinking.
The hospital board members want to change those statistics and concentrate on having a facility, which would provide treatment and awareness, while introducing a healthier lifestyle.
While the price of building a new hospital was not disclosed, a board member says if ministry approval for the construction is granted, roughly 30 per cent of the total cost will have to be raised locally.
