Northwestern Ontario businesses that have not paid fines for provincial offenses could soon have a bill collector knocking on their doors.

Northwestern Ontario businesses that have not paid fines for provincial offenses could soon have a bill collector knocking on their doors.

The city and 17 other area municipalities want to collect $9 million in back fines and are about to hire a collection agency. Downloading of the collection responsibility by the province in 1998 has caused the municipalities to act.

The collection agency will also be seeking back-fines from individuals for infractions such as speeding. The fines range from $30 to $100,000 or more.
