Nipissing can now make changes and upgrades to their water system thanks to provincial and federal funding of over $1.1 million.

Both governments are each providing $588,180, which will be matched by the city, to bring together a total of $1.77 million.

The funds will be used to build an ultraviolet disinfection system, install a particle analyser, a raw-water sampling line and a chlorine analyser.

These improvements are being made to comply with Ontario drinking water protection regulations.

In July of last year the city applied for funding through the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.

A two per cent surcharge was placed on water bills, for one year, to help pay for the filtration system. It will expire in the fall.

The surcharge will be reviewed once it expires and council will figure out how much the final cost of the project will be.

The new water filtration system will be built within the next few years.
