The mayor of Fort Frances says he would use his position on the provincial government's nuisance bear committee to lobby for the reinstatement of the spring bear hunt. There is some question as to whether or not the cancellation of the spring bear hunt is the reason for a rise in the number of nuisance-bear reports, he says. The Natural Resources Ministry recently proposed the use of dogs to chase nuisance bears from residential neighborhoods; animal-rights activists are not impressed with the idea.
