IW Awards attract renowned speaker (5/03)

Yvonne Camus is not a typical business executive, and an Eco-Challenge is not a typical quest to hone one’s executive skills.

Yvonne Camus is not a typical business executive, and an Eco-Challenge is not a typical quest to hone one’s executive skills. But Camus conquered an impossible 500-kilometre race as the female member of Canada’s Team Sunlight while working as a senior executive and raising twin boys as a single parent.

Many of us may not have the inspiration to tackle a grueling Eco-Challenge, but we can still benefit from the experiences of one of Canada’s most extraordinary women executives.

Camus is the featured keynote speaker at this year’s Influential Women of Northern Ontario Awards, to be held at the Porcupine Dante Club in Timmins on May 13, and at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay on May 15.

Delegates at these prestigious awards ceremonies will have a unique opportunity to listen to Camus’ inspiring presentation complete with spectacular multimedia visuals, and the success stories of this year’s winners.

The Influential Women of Northern Ontario Awards (IW Awards) began six years ago as a special supplement to Northern Ontario Business, but has since grown to include two celebratory lunches - one in northeastern Ontario and one in northwestern Ontario - an interactive Web site, www.influentialwomen.ca, and a feature publication that is distributed at the awards luncheons and to NOB’s 10,000 subscribers.

The goal of the IW Awards is to seek out, profile and honour women in Northern Ontario who have contributed to economic wealth, job creation and quality of life in both the public and private sectors.

Two winners from each sector are chosen each year by an independent panel of judges.

The IW alumni is comprised of an impressive list of talented and successful women: Margaret Thomson, Dusty Miller, Maggie Milne, Paula Sdao and Nova Lawson from Thunder Bay; Rosetta Sicoli from Sault Ste. Marie; Karyn Loree-Spacek from Kapuskasing; Lila Cyr from Blind River; Tracey Vigars from North Bay; Marnie Hoey from Sioux Lookout; Sylvie Albert-Doucet from Timmins; Sandy Dickson from Atikokan; Chief Margaret Penasse-Mayer from Nipissing First Nation; and Louise Paquette, Gisele Chrétien and the late Karen Shaw from Sudbury.

As well, over the past six years IW has attracted more than 300 excellent nominations from across the region.

These women are all leaders in their respective communities and inspirational role models for us all.

This year four more names will be added to the growing list of some of Northern Ontario’s inspirational leaders. The names of the 2003 IW Award winners will announced at the Awards luncheon, as well as the list of this year’s nominees.

There are a limited number of tickets still available for both the Timmins and the Thunder Bay Awards luncheons.

Come out and be inspired by Camus’ incredible presentation - “Live Well. Achieving Balance in Your Personal and Professional Life” - and to honour this year’s IW Award nominees and winners.
