Group seeks Parks Canada support to promote diving (11/01)

A local shipwreck enthusiasts' group wants to promote sport-diving off Thunder Bay with the aid of Parks Canada.

A local shipwreck enthusiasts' group wants to promote sport-diving off Thunder Bay with the aid of Parks Canada. The Superior chapter of Save Ontario's Shipwrecks (SOS) has identified a shipwreck graveyard off of the harbour break wall counting about 26 sunken ships within a square kilometre. The vessels were sunk in the 1930s in an effort to remove abandoned hulls left in the harbour. The group believes the site holds a treasure trove of historical information that might be of interest to local marine buffs. Some vessels have been looted and damaged by sport divers and SOS is preparing a list of recommendations to Parks Canada to help preserve the site.
