Fort Frances in catch-22 over recycling dilemma (7/02)

Mounting debt has left behind a defunct Northwestern Ontario Recycle Association (NORA) in the northwest, and Fort Frances residents without recycling service.

Mounting debt has left behind a defunct Northwestern Ontario Recycle Association (NORA) in the northwest, and Fort Frances residents without recycling service.

The town has been unsuccessful at finding an economically feasible means of collecting, transporting and processing recyclable materials since NORA became defunct at the end of June. NORA has placed its assets up for tender, including the processing plant in Dryden. The association opted to disband after realizing there was no way to put a halt to its mounting debt load.

Under provincial regulations the town must provide recycling service, but the province has not provided funding support to enable the town to begin recycling service, an official with Fort Frances says.

Town officials have been searching for a replacement recycling pickup service, but have informed residents that service may be disrupted for up to two months, depending on how quickly a replacement can be secured.
