Toronto’s Pathway Group is welcoming former Thunder Bay Mayor and former provincial cabinet minister Bill Mauro to its ranks.

Pathway Group is a government and public relations firm located on Dundas West in downtown Toronto, a few blocks southwest of Queen’s Park. He joins the same firm where Jeff Bangs, the new board of govenors chair of Sudbury’s Laurentian University, is a partner.

With offices also in Ottawa and Hamilton, the firm handles political campaigns, strategic relationship building, public affairs and provides digital and social media solutions to clients across a variety of sectors for companies, associations and not-for-profits involved in Indigenous relations, the arts, agriculture and food, natural resources and northern development, among others.

Mauro vacated the mayor’s chair last week after announcing in August he would step down after serving one term as mayor to pursue an undisclosed “new opportunity.”

In a news release, Pathway said Mauro’s years of experience and knowledge of the “unique challenges” faced by Northern Ontario communities and political experience at the municipal and in provincial cabinet made him a worthy addition.

As MPP for the riding of Thunder Bay-Atikokan, Mauro served under Premiers Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne with cabinet minister stints at municipal affairs and housing, natural resources and forestry, and northern development and mines. He was a member of the Treasury Board and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and chaired he Liberal Northern Ontario Caucus.

He is credited for initiating Thunder Bay’s city physician recruitment program to bring doctors and specialists to the northwest, helped delivering cardiac angioplasty services to the hospital, delivered a law school to the city, and campaigned for the forestry industry and to maintain Canadian jobs at the Bombardier rail coach plant,

Mauro entered politics as a Thunder Bay municipal councillor in 1997. He was defeated as MPP in the 2018 provincial election and successful ran for mayor that year.

“After 25 years of public service, I am excited by this opportunity to work with Pathway Group,” said Mauro in a statement. “I look forward to renewing previous relationships and establishing new connections to help individuals and organizations achieve their goals.

“Pathway is an experienced and diverse group with a long-established reputation of success on behalf of their clients and I thank them for inviting me to be part of their team.”

TBnewswatch was able to confirm that Mauro plans to reside in Thunder Bay.

Peter Curtis, president of Pathway Group, welcomed Mauro aboard.

“With over two decades of experience, Bill’s political leadership credentials will enhance our firm’s ability to deliver versatile integrated strategy and execution across a range of sectors.”
