Electronic marketplace to be developed (2/02)

Over 500 northwestern Ontario small- and medium-sized enterprises will be set up on a business-to-business electronic network over a one-year period through an Internet-based project.

A FedNor contribution of $225,000 to the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce will assist in the creation of a regional electronic marketplace and Internet portal for northwestern businesses. The project is an opportunity to test the advantages of e-commerce and the application of information technology to transactions between businesses in the north, says Thunder Bay-Superior North MP, Joe Comuzzi.

"This will enhance the competitiveness of small- and medium-sized northwest businesses that supply the large corporations and institutions that operate here," Comuzzi says.

The project will provide businesses with first-hand experience of a B2B platform, help them identify the value of e-business and assist them in making informed decisions about business strategies in the e-commerce environment, officials say.
