Sudbury’s jobless rate fell for the third month in a row. Statistics Canada reported a drop in June to 9.2 per cent compared to 10 per cent in May.

Oshawa and Sudbury were the only cities reporting a decline in the unemployment rate. Moreover, it has been the second month for Sudbury where unemployment has declined at a faster rate than that of the province or the country.

The population of Sudbury has also remained constant. In previous years, the city was losing approximately 2,000 people a year.

This reflects an increase of jobs across all spectrums of occupations. A government official attributes the steady increase in economic development to mining-related activities. The federal government should commit to the City of Greater Sudbury as a mining and research development area to ensure continued growth, an economics professor says.
