Sudbury is home to a new program that’s striving to help young women become more comfortable with governance and policy, and to seek out opportunities to serve in board positions.
She’s On Board is a joint initiative of She&Her, a non-profit organization that aims to guide more women into leadership roles, and PoliticsNOW, whose mandate encourages greater participation of women in politics across Northern Ontario.
The organizations note that, according to a 2017 Deloitte survey, only 20.5 per cent of board seats in Canada are held by women, and only 57 per cent of boards in the country have three or more female directors.
The program’s first event, announced in an Oct. 7 news release, is a one-day workshop on Nov. 16, which will provide new and experienced leaders with tangible, inclusive and hands-on training.
Graduates will then be paired with a local board and join as a director, or, if no positions are open, receive mentorship from a current board member.
The ultimate goal is to help women develop their leadership skills, the release notes.
